"Beyond the Chief" Thief Mark Nepermann Pleads “Not Guilty” in Arraignment

Today, July 2, 2009, Mark Nepermann pleaded “not guilty” in court. He is charged with misdemeanour theft under $300, despite evidence given to State’s Attorney Julia Rietz of the greater artistic value of the two signs stolen from the “Beyond the Chief” exhibit at the University of Illinois.

Nepermann will be back in court July 31 at 9 a.m. for a pre-trial hearing.

The News-Gazette published an apology from Nepermann in its letters to the editor section. Yet Nepermann’s attorney Brian Silverman told him not to say anything when questioned by media after the hearing. For more about Silverman see an article I wrote a couple years ago:

Turns out Silverman is (among other things) a big Chief supporter.

Thief Admits Guilt, Gets Slap on the Wrist Due to Rietz's Mercy

The News-Gazette is reporting that Nepermann finalized his plea deal in court today. He plead guilty and agreed to a year of court supervision.  If he completes the year without further issues, it will clear his record. He also has a $200 fine, a 100 hours of community service and was refered to get a substance evaluation.

On the last, here's a tip -- Lay off the beer. Smoke some reefer instead, as you're much less likely to do something so stupid if you're only stoned.

Don't get caught with the reefer, though, even once your year is up. You're very unlikely to be shown such mercy for that type of offence.

For instance, Ms. Reitz is on a jihad to improve public health in Champaign County by protecting us from the threat of marijuana, even for medical use. She was heard recently commenting on TV (Ch 15) about the proposal for medical marijuana that has passed both houses in Springfield. This, despite the fact that the American Public Health Association adopted a resolution in 1995 that supports a more rational and science-based approach to public policy. Rietz should stick to legal stuff, where she has some minimal comptence, instead of trampling clumsily on the professional turf of those who have science, instead of dirty Illinois politics, on their side.

Speaking of minimal competence in one's job, the News-Gazette said nothing about the controversial way that Rietz determined that the signs that Nepermann was caught vandalizing and stealing were worth less than $300. If they had been worth more, she would have been forced to hit the thief with a felony charge, instead of the virtual "Get out of Jail Free" card she handed him instead. Speaking of...

There was NO MENTION of any requirement for Nepermann to make compensation to the artist, Heap of Birds, whose art he damaged. I guess that's just one more case where the government is showing how "even-handed" in its treatment of Native Americans it is, huh? Shame, shame on the State's Attorney for this. Best we can do, though, as we're talking about what passes for justice in the dirty politics of Illinois.
