About the New Website

After years of using imc-dada as our site management software, we have switched to the open-source platform called drupal.

Why make the switch?

Pragmatically, it's be because we were being hit by spambots pouring hundreds and hundreds of spams a day into our site. It was clear that a software upgrade was necessary. Several other IMC sites have recently gone to using the Drupal system, and we had a general consensus among the web group that it was time we did the same.

Drupal is a large open-source development process with many development groups contributing pieces. Right now, development expertise for standard IMC platforms like SF-Active, Dada, and Mir is stretched to the limit doing maintenance, so that new features aren't getting implemented as rapidly as they are in the Drupal world. So moving to Drupal is a strategy for maintaining a first-class open-source site that's flexible and easy to extend as new technologies become available. UC-IMC isn't the only site making such a move; see the IMC Drupal develop list for more information.

What's the current status?

if you're reading this, then we're live!

We've still got some tweakage to do, but what you see is just an awful lot like what you're going to get.

Should I use an account to post here?

We recommend that regular users sign up for an account. Registered users have access to additional site features, such as the ability to edit your own story, and to post comments without having to type a verification code.

For more about the site migration process, check out the spiffy wiki page here.

Is everything from the old site gone?

Nope, we haven't thrown the old site away. It's still available at archive.ucimc.org, although posting has been disabled there. If you've saved links to things on the previous site, the links should still be valid. You can also go to the old site by clicking the "To the Old Site" link in the right sidebar, inside the "Be the media!" box.

Does searching using the search box here find things on the old site?

No, this site and the old dada site use two different indexing mechanisms. If you're looking for something and don't find it here, try searching the old site.
