independent media activists telling their stories in kenya
This interesting post comes via the Stubblefield LPFM list and is written by Hannah Sassaman. The good work that the Indymedia network does has worldwide reach.
I wanted to point people at Nancy Scola's great post at
WorldChanging.com on the power of cell-phones to break the media
blackout on the struggles of everyday people in Kenya,
post-stolen-election:
http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/007786.html
As a companion to great blog posts like the one Wilson Ugangu, former
Consumers' Union fellow, put together at hearusnow.org
(http://www.hearusnow.org/homepage/guestcolumns/newthreatsonthemediainkenyainwakeofdisputedelection/),
Kenya independent media activists are telling their own stories at
http://kenya.indymedia.org. Without regular internet access in
anywhere but Kenya's biggest cities, activists are using cell phones
to conduct interviews and tell stories of conflict and hope
nationwide.
There's a lot we can do to help. The biggest thing that the Kenya
Indymedia activists have asked us in the land of lattes and
blackberries to do is to spread the word about their work. I'd like
to prevail upon readers who find this work inspiring to donate today
-- even a few dollars can make a big difference, as you can see from
this great piece. Donate through the Urbana-Champaign Independent
Media Center, which is fiscally sponsoring this project -- your
donations are tax-deductible! http://ucimc.org/info/donate
If you need more inspiration, listen to one of John's radio
productions on the crisis and its resolution here --
http://phillyimc.org/en/2008/01/43958.shtml -- and check out the Ten
Things You Can Do to support these activists in their struggle.
You can also watch this fantastic slideshow of John and dozens of
other African media activists building radio stations with Prometheus
and global allies in Kisumu, Maseno, and in communities across Nairobi
hetre -- http://tinyurl.com/26fov5 -- and join the Facebook group in
support of these activists here -- http://tinyurl.com/2z29pb .
